Introducing Bitesnap: A Smart Photo Food Journal

Bitesnap is an easier way to track what you eat.

Everyone wants to eat more healthily, and keeping a food journal is a great tool for doing so — but manually entering your meals can be a tedious and time-consuming process.

That’s why we built Bitesnap, a new food journal app designed around photos. It makes tracking what you eat as easy as taking a picture, and it’s launching today for iPhone and Android.

How It Works

With Bitesnap, you can log a meal just by taking a picture and confirming a few details. Bitesnap recognizes the foods in the image and automatically calculates their calories and nutrients. Out of the box, the app can recognize over 1,300 types of food and drink. And over time, it learns to recognize the specific meals you eat regularly, even if they’re complex or unusual. These meals can be added to your journal with a single tap.

As you log meals, Bitesnap builds an Instagram-style feed of photos, each with nutritional facts, so it’s easy to look back and see which of your meals were healthy and balanced. It’s a great tool for becoming more mindful of what you’re eating and identifying eating habits that could be improved.

Why We Built It

Food logging is one of the most effective ways to lose weight and build healthy eating habits. Keeping track of what you eat is a simple concept, but actually doing it isn’t easy. While building Bitesnap, we spoke with dozens of people who wanted to track their diet, but found the data entry process tiresome. They weren’t able to stick with food logging long enough to achieve their goals.

We saw an opportunity to apply recent advances in image recognition to simplify the food logging process and make it more engaging. We hope to help more people gain the knowledge they need to eat a healthy and balanced diet.
